Artificial intelligence is becoming a study companion for many Nigerian students, according to new Google Search trend data released on Tuesday as schools reopen nationwide.
The tech giant revealed that searches linking “AI + studying” have jumped by more than 200 per cent compared with last year, signalling that students are moving beyond curiosity and actively turning to AI tools for learning support.
Google said learners were exploring AI tutors, free applications, and prompts across a range of subjects. For instance, searches for “AI + chemistry” climbed 50 per cent, while “AI + maths” and “AI + languages” each recorded a 30 per cent increase. Queries about grammar also went up by 20 per cent.
Among the most common questions, users asked: “What is the best AI in the world for solving mathematical problems?” and “how to use AI to solve math problems.”
Google’s West Africa Director, Olumide Balogun, noted that the trend shows a deeper shift in how students approach learning. “Nigerian learners are not just using AI for answers but as a tool to deepen their understanding of complex subjects, from chemistry to mathematics,” he said. “The company is committed to providing tools that would empower students to learn, grow, and succeed.”
The surge is not limited to schoolwork. Google reported that general interest searches such as “how to use AI” and “what is the full meaning of AI” grew by 80 per cent, while “who is the father of AI” increased 70 per cent. At the same time, “AI detection” spiked 290 per cent, a trend the company linked to concerns over responsible use and academic integrity.
Career-oriented queries are also rising. Google highlighted “Generative AI” as a breakout term over the last year, frequently appearing alongside “professional certification,” suggesting that young Nigerians are preparing for an AI-driven workforce.
Overall, Google said AI-related searches in Nigeria reached an all-time high in 2025, up 60 per cent year-on-year, underlining how quickly the technology is becoming part of everyday academic and professional life.
