The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has condemned a recent assault on a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member by vigilantes in Anambra State.
The New Daily Prime earlier reported that a group of vigilantes at Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area (LGA) of Anambra State assaulted and stripped a female corps member of her clothing.
Bala Musa, NOA’s Director of Communication and Media in a statement on Thursday said the agency’s Director General, Lanre Issa-Onilu expressed deep dismay over the incident, calling the actions of the vigilantes “unbecoming and grossly irresponsible.”
Issa-Onilu, denounced the assault as a violation of the rights and dignity of a Nigerian citizen.

He referenced the National Values Charter, which outlines the reciprocal responsibilities between leaders and citizens.
He stated that those in positions of authority must ensure accountability, and all citizens must show mutual respect.
The DG described the abuse of power against a corps member, who is serving in the national interest, as an act that undermines the country’s core values.
Issa-Onilu commended the swift response from the Anambra State Government and urged the thorough prosecution of all individuals involved.
He emphasised that holding the perpetrators accountable is the minimum level of justice owed to the corps member whose rights were violated.

Issa-Onilu also highlighted that such incidents tarnish Nigeria’s national reputation and serve as a “wake-up call” for all citizens to uphold the nation’s positive image.
He stressed that the collective reputation of the country is sacred and should not be undermined by the actions of a few.
Aside from NOA, several other agencies including the management of the NYSC.
NYSC restated its firm stance against any act of intimidation, harassment or abuse directed at corps members across the country.
The scheme, in a statement condemned the assault on a female corps member, Edema Jennifer with the state code: AN/24C/0626.

The management described the incident as “unacceptable,” stressing that the safety and welfare of corps members remain a top priority.
