President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to former military President, General Ibrahim Babangida, on his 84th birthday.
In a statement, Tinubu celebrated the retired military leader, acknowledging his eight-year tenure as having significantly impacted Nigeria’s socio-economic and political landscape.
The President joined Babangida’s family, friends, and associates in marking the milestone.
Tinubu also highlighted General Babangida’s notable military career, which included a distinguished period as an instructor at the Nigerian Defence Academy.
Babangida went on to hold several key positions, such as Commander of the 4 Reconnaissance Regiment, Commander of the Nigerian Army Armoured Corps, and Chief of Army Staff.
The President’s message specifically recognized Babangida’s military administration for its substantial investments in infrastructure, citing projects like the Third Mainland Bridge.
He also noted the administration’s key reforms that liberalised the Nigerian economy.

Tinubu further praised Babangida’s role in the creation of several states and the landmark decision to relocate the Federal capital from Lagos to Abuja.
The former military leader’s government was also credited with establishing key national security and safety agencies, including the State Security Service, the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
Tinubu thanked Babangida for his sacrifices and leadership, praying that Almighty Allah would grant him many more years and renewed strength.
