WaterMaAs scorching temperatures hit the UK this week, households are being encouraged to try a simple and cost-effective method to keep their homes cool by placing a bowl of water on a windowsill.
With the Met Office forecasting highs of 33°C in London on Tuesday, followed by 29°C on Wednesday and Thursday, and 30°C on Friday, much of England is expected to officially reach heatwave conditions. In response, experts are offering practical advice for staying cool without relying on expensive air conditioning units.
The method uses evaporative cooling as water evaporates, it draws heat from the surrounding air, helping to lower the room temperature. Placing a bowl of water on a windowsill, bedside table, or near an open window can make a noticeable difference, especially when there’s a breeze.
“Water can be used to cool a room when you don’t have air conditioning or want to save electricity. Evaporation is the best method, often referred to as a ‘swamp cooler.’”
Use medium to large round bowls (like fishbowls).
Place them under open windows to catch the breeze.
For a stronger cooling effect, add ice cubes to the water and point a fan at the bowl. As the ice melts, it cools the air further and the fan helps circulate it through the room.
This method can also be used outdoors just be mindful of mosquito risks if you live in an area where they’re a concern.
According to met office, “a combination of high pressure and a southerly airflow will see temperatures rise for much of England and Wales in the first half of the week, with temperatures likely peaking towards the mid-30s in London on Tuesday.”
If you’re looking for an easy, energy-saving way to beat the heat, grab a bowl, add water (and maybe some ice), and let nature help you stay cool.
