Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare found the back of the net for the first time this season, but his goal was not enough to prevent KRC Genk from falling 2-1 to Standard Liège in the Belgian Pro League on Sunday.
The 24-year-old, who topped the scoring charts in Belgium last season, began the match on the bench at the Stade Maurice Dufrasne. Head coach Thorsten Fink opted for Jarne Steuckers in attack from the start, leaving Arokodare to wait for his opportunity.
Arokodare Standard Take Control Early
The home side seized the initiative in the first half. Standard’s persistence in the final third was rewarded in the 37th minute when Thomas Henry confidently converted from the penalty spot after a foul in the box.
Genk, who have struggled for rhythm in the opening weeks of the campaign, found themselves chasing the game again early in the second half. Standard doubled their advantage through Marlon Fossey, whose well-timed run and finish in the 53rd minute put the hosts firmly in control.
Impact Off the Bench
Looking for a way back into the contest, Fink turned to his star striker in the 67th minute, bringing Arokodare on for Steuckers. The substitution paid immediate dividends. Just three minutes later, the Nigerian latched onto a loose ball in the box and slotted home to reduce the deficit.
It was a trademark poacher’s finish from Arokodare, who demonstrated the predatory instincts that saw him net 21 league goals last season. The strike offered Genk hope of salvaging a point, but despite increased pressure in the final 20 minutes, the visitors were unable to find an equaliser.
Slow Start to the Season
The result leaves Genk in 14th place after three matches, still searching for their first win of the 2025/26 campaign. It has been a frustrating start for Fink’s side, who were expected to mount a title challenge after finishing near the top last term.
Arokodare’s limited playing time so far has been a surprise to many, given his prolific form in 2024/25. Whether his goal against Standard will prompt a return to the starting XI remains to be seen, but his contribution off the bench will strengthen his case for more minutes.
Reaction from the Camp
Speaking after the match, Fink acknowledged his team’s slow start but praised Arokodare’s impact. “Tolu came on and did exactly what we needed — he was sharp, hungry, and scored a good goal,” said the Genk coach. “We have to find the right balance to get the best out of all our players.”
For Arokodare, the goal is a personal milestone but one that comes with mixed emotions. “I’m happy to score my first goal of the season, but I wanted it to help us get something from the game,” he said. “We need to work harder and turn things around quickly.”
Looking Ahead
Genk’s next opportunity to secure their first victory comes on Friday, 15 August, when they travel to face OH Leuven. The match presents a chance to reset their season against a side also battling for points.
For Nigerian football fans, Arokodare’s goal is a positive sign that the forward is finding his rhythm despite a challenging start. With the African Cup of Nations qualifiers on the horizon, consistent club form could see him become a key figure for the Super Eagles.
While the defeat to Standard Liège will sting, Genk will hope that Arokodare’s breakthrough can spark a turnaround in fortunes — starting with their trip to Leuven.
