As the world commemorates the 2025 World Population Day (WPD), the Rivers State Government has renewed its call for increased investment in healthcare and a stronger emphasis on family planning to ensure the well-being of its people and promote sustainable development.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Health on Friday via their social media page, the government underscored the significance of aligning population growth with available resources and infrastructure.
It stressed that equitable access to quality healthcare services is not only a right but a necessary foundation for a thriving and prosperous society.

The Rivers Health Ministry reaffirmed its dedication to enhancing the state’s healthcare system by upgrading medical infrastructure, investing in modern equipment, and expanding training for healthcare professionals.
It also highlighted the importance of supporting community-based health programmes that reach rural and underserved populations.
“World Population Day serves as a reminder of the importance of balancing population growth with sustainable development, ” the state Ministry of Health emphasised.
The government further stressed that sustainable development is achievable only when families are empowered with the knowledge and tools to make informed choices about their reproductive health.
It called for collaborative efforts to ensure that healthcare services are accessible regardless of economic or geographic barriers.
“We urge individuals, organisations, and government agencies to join us in this effort, and to support our initiatives aimed at promoting reproductive health, strengthening healthcare access, and empowering communities,” the Ministry stated.
World Population Day, observed every 11 July with the 2025 theme titled “Empowering young people to create the families they want in a fair and hopeful world,” draws global attention to issues related to population dynamics and their impact on development.
