Controversial Nollywood actor Uche Maduagwu has taken a public swipe at May Edochie, urging her to speak up against the growing wave of online insults targeted at her estranged husband, Yul Edochie.
Maduagwu, known for his outspoken nature, shared his opinion on Instagram, questioning May’s continued silence amid the constant trolling of Yul by her supporters.
Maduagwu accuses May of silent endorsement
In his post, the actor argued that although May might not have full control over what her fans say online, she has a moral obligation to step in and discourage the attacks. According to him, remaining silent sends the wrong message.
He said May’s failure to address the insults could be interpreted as a form of indirect approval. He further reminded the public that she is still legally married to Yul Edochie, despite their separation.
“The May Nation knows that their Queen May is still legally married to Yul Edochie,” Maduagwu wrote. “Yet they come online, ridicule him, insult him, and say all sorts of things about his family name. Is that how to respect your Queen May? Make una fear God.”
“You’re still married to him”, Maduagwu
Maduagwu went further to state that he doesn’t entirely blame those trolling Yul. Instead, he placed more responsibility on May herself. He believes she could have taken steps to caution her followers and prevent further disrespect toward her husband.
“Honestly, I don’t blame those people for ridiculing Yul Edochie,” he continued. “I blame Queen May because she knows she is still legally married to this man. Yet some people gather on social media to insult, ridicule, and speak badly about him, and she has never made a post telling them to stop. Not once has she said, ‘He is still my husband, we are not legally divorced.’”
“Drop the name if you won’t defend it”
In a more confrontational tone, Maduagwu challenged May to either defend the Edochie name or stop using it altogether. He alleged that some fans believe May continues to enjoy public sympathy, endorsement deals, and brand recognition largely due to her association with the Edochie surname.
“If you know you’re not ready to tell your fans to stop insulting your husband,” he warned, “you need to drop that name. Some people are saying it’s the Edochie name that’s bringing you favour and endorsements. In fact, I challenge you, Queen May prove to Nigerians that you are a Christian woman and that you respect your legally married husband. Tell your fans to stop ridiculing him.”
Social media reactions
Maduagwu’s post has sparked mixed reactions online. While some supported his view and called for more civility in public discussions about celebrities’ private lives, others criticised him for dragging May into another controversy.
Many of May’s supporters argue that she has every right to stay silent, especially considering the emotional toll of her public marital struggles. They believe her silence is a form of personal boundary rather than an endorsement of online bullying.
The bigger picture
May and Yul Edochie’s marital crisis has remained in the public eye since Yul announced his second marriage to actress Judy Austin. The move shocked many Nigerians and led to an outpouring of support for May.
However, as public sympathy continues to grow in May’s favour, voices like Maduagwu’s are questioning whether she has a role to play in controlling how far her fans go in defending her.
While it remains unclear whether May will respond to Maduagwu’s challenge, his comments have once again drawn attention to the complex web of personal choices, public expectations, and social media culture that surrounds celebrity relationships in Nigeria.
