Nigerian Afrobeats singer Emmanuel Adewale, better known as Mayorkun, has hinted at the possibility of leaving the country.
He cited the growing hardship as a reason for considering relocation.
On Monday, Mayorkun shared his thoughts on social media. Posting on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, “I dey reason to japa [relocate].” His statement quickly sparked reactions from fans and fellow celebrities.
Growing trend of celebrity relocation
Mayorkun is not the only Nigerian celebrity contemplating a move abroad. Over the years, many well-known figures in the entertainment industry have left the country in search of better opportunities or improved living conditions.
Several Nigerian stars, including reality TV personality Tacha and music veterans Eldee and Dr. Sid, have already relocated. The film industry has also seen some of its biggest names move abroad. Nollywood actresses such as Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Rita Dominic, and Uche Jombo have all spent significant time outside Nigeria in recent years. Actor Emeka Ike has also chosen to live overseas.
Last year, musician and politician Banky W confirmed that he had moved to the United States with his family. He explained that the decision was primarily for educational reasons.
Economic challenges driving migration
Many Nigerians, including celebrities, have been struggling with the country’s economic situation. Inflation, rising living costs, and unstable electricity have made daily life difficult for many citizens. The ongoing economic challenges have forced people from different walks of life to consider relocating to countries with better living conditions.

For entertainers, financial instability in the industry adds to the pressure. The high cost of production, lack of government support, and piracy continue to affect music and film revenue. As a result, many celebrities explore opportunities in other countries where they can earn more and enjoy a better quality of life.
Fans react to Mayorkun’s post
Mayorkun’s post about relocation triggered mixed reactions. Some fans sympathized with him, agreeing that the economic situation in Nigeria is tough. Others encouraged him to stay and keep making music for his Nigerian audience. A few critics accused celebrities of abandoning the country instead of using their influence to push for change.
However, this trend is not unique to entertainers. In recent years, thousands of skilled professionals, including doctors, engineers, and tech experts, have left Nigeria in search of better opportunities abroad. This wave of migration, popularly called the “japa” movement, continues to grow.
What’s next for Mayorkun?
Mayorkun has not confirmed whether he will go through with his plan to relocate. For now, he remains active in the music industry, performing at shows and working on new projects.
If he decides to leave, he will be joining a growing list of Nigerian entertainers who have sought a fresh start abroad. Whether he stays or moves, his fans will be watching closely to see what comes next.
