In the advent of emergency rule in the state, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the immediate deployment of security personnel and resources to monitor and safeguard Rivers State.
In collaboration with Armed Forces and other security agencies, Egbetokun gave this order, indicating that the political crisis could have broader implications for national security.
This was contained in a statement shared by Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police spokesperson, dated 20 March.
This came after President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency on 18 March along with the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy and elected members of the House of Assembly.
“Prior to this declaration, the Nigeria police force has been monitoring the imminent threats to public order and safety in River State, receiving and sharing intelligence with other security agencies,” the spokesperson said.
Adejobi recalled that for more than 22 months the state has been engulfed with political battles, stating the aim of the deployment was to avert a total breakdown of law and order within the state.

“This effort, undertaken in collaboration with the Armed Forces and other security agencies, is intended to bolster security, protect lives and property, and secure critical infrastructure in the state,” Adejobi said.
“The Nigeria Police Force emphasises that aggrieved individuals retain the right to seek legal redress through the appropriate judicial channels.
“Consequently, any attempt to exploit the situation through unlawful gatherings, protests, or activities to disrupt public peace will be met with the full force of the law.”
Egbetokun also encourages citizens to obey the law and comply with all legal directives, urging them to go about their business without fear.
Speaking further, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) reaffirm their commitment to maintaining peace and security.
Residents are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that may compromise public safety to the NPF.
“Individuals or groups with criminal intent are hereby warned to stay away from Rivers State. Security forces are fully prepared to take decisive action against any threats to the peace and stability of the state.
