Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed Lagos’s commitment to regional integration and collaboration within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the ECOWAS Parliamentary Seminar, the governor delivered a keynote address highlighting the organization’s achievements and future goals.
Sanwo-Olu emphasised the significance of the event, which coincides with two major milestones: 50 years since the founding of ECOWAS and 25 years of the ECOWAS Parliament.
He described these anniversaries as a testament to the resilience and shared vision of West African nations in fostering economic cooperation, peace, and security.

Reflecting on the founding of ECOWAS on May 28, 1975, through the Treaty of Lagos, he noted how the organisation has evolved into a dynamic force shaping the region’s economic and political landscape.

He stressed that the theme of the seminar, “ECOWAS at 50, Parliament at 25: Reflections of the Community Parliament toward Attaining Regional Integration Achievements,” serves as an opportunity to assess past progress and chart a path forward.
The governor highlighted Lagos’s historical and ongoing role in ECOWAS’s journey, describing the city as a vital hub for economic and cultural exchange.
He reiterated Lagos’s readiness to support ECOWAS in deepening regional cooperation, tackling common challenges, and improving the lives of citizens across member states.
Sanwo-Olu also commended the ECOWAS Parliament for organising the seminar, urging participants to engage in meaningful discussions, exchange ideas, and forge partnerships that will drive the region toward a more prosperous future.
