The Lagos State Water Corporation (LASWARCO) has entered into a partnership with WaterAid to revamp the Akilo Micro Waterworks, a long-dormant facility set to provide clean water to communities in Ifako-Ijaiye.
The agreement was formalized at a contract signing ceremony held at LASWARCO’s headquarters in Ijora yesterday.
Originally constructed in 2012 as part of Lagos’ network of 18 micro waterworks, the Akilo facility is now undergoing rehabilitation through a collaboration between WaterAid and Armani Beauty.
Speaking at the event, Mukhtaar Tijani, Managing Director of LASWARCO, emphasized the project’s significance, noting that once completed, it would supply potable water to over 100,000 households.

“Extensive baseline and household studies were conducted before selecting the contractor for this crucial project. Our goal is to ensure that safe drinking water reaches the residents of Akilo and surrounding areas,” Tijani stated.
He confirmed that Rigmars Projects Limited, the contracted firm, would commence work once an initial payment is made, with a completion timeline of six months.
WaterAid Nigeria’s Country Director, Evelyn Mere, highlighted the thorough planning involved in reviving the facility, from technical evaluations to procurement processes.
“The impact of inadequate access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene services is profound, contributing to serious health risks. Approximately 90% of deaths from diarrheal diseases stem from poor water quality and sanitation,” Mere explained.
She further noted that WaterAid is shifting its focus towards large-scale interventions, and the Akilo project aligns with this strategy.
Nwankwo Chimechefolam, Managing Director of Rigmars Projects Limited, assured stakeholders of the project’s timely and high-quality execution.
