University of Ilesa, Osun, have issued a directive to staff members, instructing them to prevent any student dressed improperly from attending lectures or accessing university offices. This new policy aims to uphold the institution’s standards of decorum and discipline, ensuring that students adhere to the university’s dress code and maintain a respectful environment on campus.
The announcement was made by the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Taiwo Asaolu, during his address at the institution’s second matriculation ceremony held on Wednesday. The ceremony welcomed newly admitted students for the 2024/2025 academic session at the university’s Ilesa campus.
Prof. Asaolu used the occasion to emphasize the importance of discipline both on and off campus. He stated that the university would not award its certificate to any student who fails to demonstrate commitment to their studies or lacks the necessary discipline and character to succeed in higher education.
He stressed that, in line with university policy, students must always display their identity cards on their person, either around their necks or on their chest pockets, while within university premises. This measure is designed to ensure easy identification and prevent any confusion or embarrassment at the university’s security gates.
“As the saying goes, you are addressed according to how you are dressed,” Asaolu remarked. “The university will not tolerate attire that exposes body parts in a way that may offend others.”
He further explained that the university’s security personnel, along with the Directorate of Internal Quality Assurance and Servicom (DIQA & S), have been empowered to apprehend and sanction students who fail to comply with the dress code. Additionally, all university staff, both teaching and non-teaching, have been given the authority to deny improperly dressed students entry to their offices or lectures.
The Vice-Chancellor also took the opportunity to warn against unacceptable behaviour, including cultism, bullying, hooliganism, and harassment. He reiterated that any student involved in such activities would face serious consequences.
“For those who may already be involved in such groups, this is a final opportunity to renounce your affiliation and seek counselling for rehabilitation and reintegration into society,” Asaolu stated. “Should you be pressured by anyone to join illegal or anti-social groups, please report such individuals or groups immediately to the University Security Unit or the Director of Student Affairs.”
With these strict policies, the University of Ilesa aims to foster a conducive learning environment while upholding its values of discipline, respect, and academic excellence.
