In a bid to ensure a peaceful and orderly governorship election in Ondo State on Saturday, November 16, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has announced a series of security measures, including a complete ban on vehicular movement from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Election Day.
The restriction, which also applies to waterway and other transportation modes, aims to minimise disruptions and maintain order throughout the state during the voting process.
However, essential services such as ambulances, media personnel, and fire services will be exempt from the movement ban.
In addition, the IGP has prohibited the presence of security aides and VIP escorts at polling stations and collation centers.
This measure is designed to prevent any disruptions that could arise from the presence of unauthorised security personnel during the election.
“Unnecessary vehicular movement will be restricted to ensure smooth voting. Only authorised vehicles such as those for essential services will be allowed,” said Police Force Spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, in a statement issued on Thursday, November 14.
A further provision of the security plan includes a ban on the use of sirens by unauthorised vehicles, and no quasi-security agencies will be permitted to operate during the election.
The IGP also emphasized that elderly individuals, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and people with disabilities will receive special consideration to ensure accessibility to polling units.
The police have made clear their commitment to maintaining a secure and democratic environment, urging citizens to report any suspicious activities that could threaten the integrity of the election. They will also collaborate with the military and other federal security agencies to ensure a peaceful electoral process.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Sylvester Alabi has been appointed to coordinate security operations, with the support of AIG Bennett Igweh and CP Tunji Disu.
