After getting a positive result against Brentford last weekend, Manchester United fans have a reason to look forward with hope to their Europa League trip to face Fenerbahce.
The Turkish side, coached by former United coach Jose Mourinho, are not without motivation to beat the Red Devils on Thursday evening. However, the atmosphere has improved around the team, with speculation over the gaffer’s job not as rife as it was before last weekend. There’s also the renewed hope of better goalscoring prospects with the full return of Rasmus Hojlund, who has said much about how Ruud van Nistelrooy’s presence would help his development. There was evidence of this with his important winning goal over the weekend.
Ten Hag appreciates how important the game is, both for him and Mourinho, describing it as “a big game for both of us.” He also acknowledges how important his opponent is, both as a predecessor at United and as a respected coach. He admitted that the Portuguese is an example other managers should follow. United’s last European trophy was under Mourinho and ten Hag would be right to follow his example by bringing the trophy back to Old Trafford.
Mourinho’s side are fourth in the Türkish Super, losing a crucial rivalry to Galatasaray last month. The side has also gathered just four points in the opening two Europa League games this season, making it imperative for Mourinho’s men to get a result in front of their fans.
