The issue of adopting consensus to choose candidates for next year’s general elections may finally pit incumbent Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, against former governor Gbenga Daniel, over Ogun East Senatorial District ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Abiodun and Daniel have been at loggerheads over who gets the senatorial ticket.
Sources in the APC Ogun State said with the adoption of consensus to choose the governorship candidate on Monday night where Senator Solomon Adeola was adopted, the same could be used for other major posts.
While both men agreed on the emergence of Adeola, the issue of the senatorial ticket could become a sour development in the party in the State.
“Both men have the support of some leaders in the state and even outside the state. It is no secret that they want the senatorial ticket. They have fought a lot of battles over the issue and the battles may still continue.
Abiodun as the current governor wants to use current party leaders in the state who are obviously loyal to him to endorse him, while Daniel is banking on some leaders of the party too.
“The major fear is that if the two are allowed to go for primaries, the end result may not be good for the party. It will be too divisive for the party and that won’t be good,” a party leader said.
It was gathered that some APC leaders are looking at the possibility of asking President Bola Tinubu to intervene and decide who gets the ticket.
Daniel had earlier served as the senator for the district for a term before becoming the state governor from 2003 to 2011. He is on the second term in the Senate and Abiodun wants to be a senator too.
