The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed the death of Brigadier-General Oseni Braimah, commander of the 29 Brigade, following a terrorist attack in Benisheikh, Kaga LGA of Borno State.
In a statement on Friday, Director of Defence Media Operations, Michael Onoja, said Braimah died alongside another officer and two soldiers during the assault on Thursday.
“On 9 April 2026, troops deployed in Benisheikh in Kaga LGA of Borno State came under terrorists’ attack. Troops engaged the terrorists and held their ground. Regrettably, some personnel paid the supreme price; including the Brigade Commander, Brigadier General OO Braimah and 3 other Armed Forces personnel,” the statement read.
Earlier, the New Daily Prime reported that Nigerian Army had dismissed reports claiming that 17 soldiers, including a brigade commander, were killed in the attack, describing such accounts as exaggerated and misleading.
Onoja described the late commander as a courageous officer whose leadership and commitment reflected the highest ideals of the military.
“The AFN mourns deeply with the families, loved ones, and colleagues of these fallen heroes. Their courage will forever be etched in the history of the AFN,” he said.
He added that the Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede, and the entire Armed Forces stand with the bereaved families, describing the deceased as “extraordinary Nigerians who chose to stand between danger and the rest of the nation.”
The DHQ assured Nigerians that ongoing military operations would continue with renewed determination in honour of the fallen personnel.
