Chieftains of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have warned President Bola Tinubu against turning Nigeria into a one-party state, describing the move as a direct threat to the country’s democracy.
The strong message was delivered on Wednesday during the OccupyINEC protest in Abuja. Speaking on behalf of the party, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi told demonstrators that the Tinubu administration was undermining democratic governance.

“We are simply holding a peaceful demonstration to say that we cannot have a one-party system in our country. It is a democratic nation,” Obi said.
“We are appealing to those in government: do not destroy our democracy. We need it for our children and for generations to come. Nigerians must have the freedom to choose who leads them. This is critical for our country.”
Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi also addressed the crowd, accusing the Tinubu administration of inflicting hunger on Nigerians while failing to deliver on key promises.
“Imagine a president who came to power and the first thing he did was to change the national anthem… and gave us hunger,” Amaechi said.
“He said he would give us roads; up till now, they have not given us roads. The money is gone. By the grace of God, they will lose the election.”
Amaechi predicted that President Tinubu would lose the 2027 presidential election, citing widespread discontent over economic hardship and unfulfilled infrastructure pledges.

The protest, organised under the OccupyINEC banner, reflects growing opposition concerns about alleged attempts to stifle political pluralism and weaken the Independent National Electoral Commission’s independence ahead of the next general elections.
Party leaders at the rally stressed that Nigerians deserved genuine democratic choice rather than a system dominated by a single party. They called on the government to protect democratic institutions and uphold the will of the people.
The ADC’s intervention adds to the mounting pressure on the ruling All Progressives Congress as opposition figures intensify campaigns against perceived authoritarian tendencies.
