Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has alleged that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are unsettled by the growing momentum of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said the recent political developments have positioned him as “the centre of gravity in the unfolding 2027 political equation.”
He argued that the increasing convergence of opposition figures within the ADC has triggered panic among what he described as “anti-democratic elements,” who are now resorting to disinformation to weaken the party’s rising influence.
According to Atiku, claims suggesting he has retired from politics are false and part of a coordinated effort to undermine his political standing and the broader opposition movement.
“This is not sentiment. It is political reality,” he stated, adding that what some dismiss as political “noise” often signals deeper shifts in alliances and public sentiment.
He maintained that no amount of propaganda would halt what he described as a growing movement driven by Nigerians seeking change.
“We urge supporters of Atiku Abubakar, members of the ADC, and all well-meaning Nigerians to disregard this propaganda in its entirety and remain steadfast in the collective mission to rebuild our nation,” the statement added.
The remarks come amid intensified political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, including the recent defection of former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to the ADC—an event widely seen as boosting the party’s profile.
Political observers note that the evolving alliances within the opposition could reshape the electoral landscape, potentially setting the stage for a highly competitive contest in 2027.
