Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has claimed that President Bola Tinubu’s visit to the United Kingdom brings no benefit to Nigeria.
Speaking in an interview on Channels Television, Sowore described the trip as a “diplomatic excursion” that costs the country too much.
Tinubu and his wife, Oluremi, arrived at London’s Stansted Airport on Tuesday. This is considered a historic state visit, as it is the first time a Nigerian leader has been officially invited to meet King Charles III in nearly forty years.
The government although claimed the trip is meant to attract new investors. This has been contested by Sowore.
Sowore maintained that these foreign trips have not brought a “single dime” into the Nigerian economy.
He argued that if Nigeria were a good place for business, investors would come on their own without the president needing to travel.
According to him, the cost of flying the presidential jet and staying abroad outweighs any possible benefits.
Sowore noted that we are “just burning fuel in the air with our aircraft.”
He suggested that the president might even be using the trip as an excuse to see his doctors, noting that Tinubu had not travelled for about a month.
Sowore further claimed that Nigerian musicians who tour the UK actually bring more money back to the country than the president’s official visits do.
He believes the government is simply “deceiving” the public with the fanfare shown on television.
He said, “I’m just saying, beyond the fanfare you are seeing on TV, it’s not bringing anything to Nigeria that Nigeria cannot get or should not have. That’s the point I’m making, and we are just deceiving ourselves all the time by saying this time we travel.”
Sowore insisted that the frequent trips by the president do not help the average citizen, noting that if Nigeria has it right, these travels are not needed.
