A significant shift is underway in Nigeria’s political landscape, with 12 members of the House of Representatives announcing their defection from their various political parties to join All Progressives Congress (APC) and African Democratic Congress (ADC) respectively.
During a plenary session on Thursday according to a post shared on X (formerly called Twitter), the Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu revealed that six lawmakers had left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the ruling APC.
Additionally, six other legislators switched parties, moving from the Young Progressives Party (YPP) and the Labour Party (LP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The defected prominent lawmakers include Muktar Betara, Zakari Nyampa, Peter Uzokwe and Murphy Omoruyi, while some are citing internal crises and leadership disagreements within their former parties as reasons for their departure.
This wave of defections is seen as a strategic realignment, with politicians positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The move has sparked discussions on party loyalty, internal conflicts, and the growing appeal of the APC and ADC across different regions and social platforms.
Some of the citizens on X fussed with several reactions towards the multiple defections of political figures ahead of the 2027 General elections.
Ozioma, an X user explained that every political figure is strategically placing themselves ahead of the forthcoming 2027 general elections.
“Everyone is strategically placing themselves for 2027 elections,” Ozioma.
Idris Garba, another X user added that “this culture of jumping from one party to another is exactly why many are losing trust in politics.”
Alpha-rison described the carpet crossing activity as “empty heads, no plans and no direction.”
