The Rivers State Police Command has announced a statewide enforcement against vehicles operating without proper registration number plates.
The exercise, which will begin on March 16, will see security officers impound vehicles found without valid or clearly displayed number plates across the state.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, said the operation was part of efforts to improve public safety and strengthen crime prevention.
According to her, vehicles with covered or obscured number plates will also be affected during the enforcement.
The statement said, “The statewide clampdown on vehicles operating without valid registration number plates, or with covered or obscured number plates, will commence on Monday, March 16, 2026.”
The police said such vehicles pose security risks because they are often used to carry out criminal activities.
The command also warned motorists against using revolving or flashing lights without official approval from the appropriate authorities.
It noted that any vehicle found using such lights illegally would be impounded during the exercise.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Olugbenga Adepoju, assured residents that the operation would be conducted professionally.
According to him, the enforcement is meant to ensure that motorists comply with traffic regulations and help security agencies identify vehicles easily.
The police also cautioned commercial drivers against using heavily tinted windows, warning that such vehicles are sometimes used by criminals posing as transport operators.
Members of the public were urged to ensure that their vehicles have valid and visible number plates and to carry all necessary vehicle documents while driving.
The command added that anyone found violating the rules may have their vehicle seized and could face prosecution in line with the law.
Residents were also encouraged to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency contact lines.
