Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has transmitted a list of nine commissioner nominees to the State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as members of the executive council.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Clerk of the Assembly, Emeka Amadi, directed the nominees to submit their official documents to his office ahead of the screening process.
Those nominated include Datonye Alasia, Tonye Bellgam, Temple Nwofor, Peters Nwagor, Charity Deemua, Tamuno Williams, Lekue Kenneth, Otonye Amachree, and Amairigha Edward Hart.
“The Rivers state house of assembly hereby invites nominees for appointment as commissioners and members of the Rivers State Executive Council to submit forty (40) sets of their curriculum vitae (CV), photocopies of credentials and evidence of compliance with tax obligations,” the statement read.
“All documents should be forwarded to the office of the Clerk of the House at the Rivers State House of Assembly Quarters.”
The nominations come about a month after President Bola Tinubu brokered peace talks involving Fubara and Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, following months of political tension in Rivers State.
The meeting, held at the State House in Abuja, resulted in a truce between both political figures after a prolonged struggle over control of the state’s political structure.
Shortly after the reconciliation, Fubara dissolved the state executive council and instructed commissioners and special advisers to hand over responsibilities to permanent secretaries in their respective ministries.
The Rivers State House of Assembly subsequently suspended its third impeachment attempt against the governor and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.
Wike had earlier stated that President Tinubu’s intervention would represent the final effort to resolve the political dispute, which began in 2023 following disagreements between the governor and his predecessor over governance and political authority in the state.
The crisis later escalated significantly, culminating in the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State by the president.
