A female operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has lost her life after being struck by one of the agency’s operational vehicles during a simulation exercise in Abuja.
Confirming the incident on Saturday, NSCDC spokesperson, Afolabi Babawale, said the tragic accident occurred during a coordinated operational drill conducted by personnel of the corps.
The identity of the deceased officer had not been made public at the time of filing this report.
A video circulating online captured the moment the incident happened, showing the officer being hit and run over by a patrol vehicle while it was manoeuvring during the exercise. The vehicle later stopped as fellow officers and bystanders quickly moved to rescue her.
Emergency responders were subsequently called to the scene and evacuated the injured officer for medical attention.
Speaking on the development, Babawale confirmed that the agency had begun internal procedures following the fatal incident.
“It is true we lost a personnel during the simulation exercise. Our senior officers are on their way to the residence of the deceased to pay our condolences,” he said.
He added that the corps would issue a comprehensive statement to provide further details on the circumstances surrounding the accident as well as measures being taken in response to the tragedy.
