Legendary soccer player, Lionel Messi was conspicuously absent at the Saturday White House ceremony where he was scheduled to receive his Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The eight times Ballo D’Or winner was to receive the recognition, which is America’s highest civilian honour, alongside Mrs Hillary Clinton, Billionaire George Soros, ex-Basketball great, Magic Johnson and Hollywood icons, Denzel Washington and Michael J. Fox.

The Inter Miami player was noticeably absent reportedly due to a “scheduling error.” Also, no one was sent in his place to collect the award.

A statement issued on Messi’s behalf reads: “The White House informed FIFA, which informed the club at the end of December that Leo was to be awarded this recognition.

“Leo, through the club, sent a letter to the White House saying that he feels deeply honoured and that it is a great privilege to receive this recognition but that due to scheduling conflicts and prior commitments, he will not be able to attend.

“He thanked the gesture and noted that he hopes to have the opportunity to meet with him in the near future.”

Messi was recognised for his unprecedented success on the pitch and his charity work.

On being named among the honorees, the White House said of the Argentine: “He supports healthcare and education programmes for children around the world through the Leo Messi Foundation and serves as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.”
