Former France international Raphael Varane has joined the Board of Directors of Italian club Como 1907. His appointment was announced on the club’s website on Saturday just weeks after the former Manchester United and Real Madrid defender announced his retirement.
His role within Como will centre around the club’s youth programs, focusing on development and educational projects. This will require him to work closely with the Head of Development at the club Osian Roberts and the educational program manager Juliette Martin. With his experience as a top player, he will aim to help players in Como’s youth setup to achieve growth in their playing careers and also off the pitch.
Furthermore, Varane will work in a consultative role regarding the club’s product development strategy using a nexus between technology and innovation. This will see him working on advancing digital solutions for improving data analysis and ticketing systems to facilitate the club’s growth and improve engagement with fans.
The former World Cup winner sees the new role as a new beginning in his football journey after completing his playing career. He also feels excited at the prospect of contributing to the future direction of the sport from the new role. The club president Mirwan Suwarso was enthusiastic about Varane’s presence in the club, emphasizing how his achievements as a player will enable him to contribute to the club’s future.
The club, newly promoted to the Seria A, is trying to modernise its structure by focusing on long-term development to enable it to stay in the top flight and compete with the best sides in the league.
Varane moved to Madrid from Lens in 2011 and spent the next 10 years winning every available silverware with the club. He was an important part of the French side that won the 2018 World Cup in Russia. He joined Manchester United in 2021 and remained with the Red Devils until his retirement weeks ago.
