Erik ten Hag’s future as Manchester United manager was one of the most rumoured topics during the international break. However, the Dutchman is set to lead the Red Devils to another Premier League game against Brentford this weekend. In his pre-match conference earlier today, he was critical of reports speculating about his continued stay at United, insisting that he and the club’s decision-makers are on the same page.
The manager described suggestions that he might be relieved of his role at United as fairytales and lies, reiterating his determination to bring the club back to the top of English and European football. Victory has eluded the Red Devils in their last five games across all competitions as they sit at 14th on the Premier League table. Notwithstanding, the manager survived several calls for his job including a six-hour meeting of the club’s board of executives during the break.
United are off to their worst start to a Premier League season but ten Hag is confident that the club is solidly behind him. He said, “The only noise is coming from some of you guys in the media, bringing up stories, creating fairytales, bringing lies because we are all on one page this club. Internally in the club, it is quiet.
“Of course, we are discussing the position where we are. We are unhappy with the position we are in and we have to turn the corner but ultimately we are quiet, we are composed, we stay where we are, we stick to the plan and we are very convinced we will make a success.”
The manager went on to confirm midfielder Kobbie Mainoo and defender Harry Maguire’s status ahead of this weekend’s clash with Brentford. Mainoo and Maguire are confirmed to be out for five games including fixtures against Fenerbahce in the Europa League and against West Ham and Chelsea in the Premier League. Both players are out with muscle injuries.
It is not all grim at Old Trafford, however, as summer signing Noussair Mazraoui had a speedy recovery after going through a minor heart last week. He had experienced palpitations when United were held to a goalless draw by Aston Villa just before the break.
