Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe has been ruled out of action for three weeks with a thigh injury, according to sources within the club. Consequently, the French superstar will not be available for Madrid’s upcoming derby against Atletico on Sunday.
Mbappe had to come off in the 80th minute of Madrid’s tense 3-2 victory over Deportivo Alaves. The striker had complained of discomfort in his left thigh during the second half of the game in which he scored to put the Los Blancos two-nil up.
Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti dismissed the injury as a “knock” in his post-game interview, adding that Mbappe requested to be brought off to avoid further complications. However, the club has released a statement to confirm the forward’s injury on Wednesday.
The statement read, “Following tests carried out today on our player Kylian Mbappe by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with an injury to the femoral biceps of his left leg.”
The striker is expected to be out of action for three weeks, ruling him out of Madrid’s Champions League game against Lille and their La Liga fixture with Villarreal. He will also be absent from the France National Team during the October international break.
Madrid are in great form ahead of their upcoming derby game, sitting second on the league table below Barcelona. The Los Blancos have gathered 17 points from seven league games. Atletico, on the other hand, have 12 points from six games and are scheduled to face Celta Vigo tonight before heading into the derby.
Mbappe has been instrumental to Madrid’s run, scoring five league goals in the process.
