Jean-Philippe Mateta’s stunning second-half goal guided Crystal Palace to a 1-0 victory over Ipswich Town at Portman Road, their first Premier League away win of the season.
The match, crucial for both teams at the foot of the table, lacked excitement in the first half, with few chances created. Palace captain Marc Guehi sparked controversy, writing a religious message on his rainbow armband despite an FA reminder to adhere to the guidelines for the Rainbow Laces campaign, supporting LGBTQ+ inclusion.
However, it was Mateta who provided the moment of brilliance. In the 59th minute, the striker flicked on a ball in his own half before charging forward, dribbling past Ipswich’s Jacob Greaves, and then chipping the ball past goalkeeper Arijanet Muric from a tight angle.
Ipswich had been strong at home this season, but Palace held firm, with Mateta having a chance to double the lead late on, only to fire straight at Muric. Ipswich pushed for an equaliser, but Liam Delap’s efforts and Jacob Greaves’ header, which hit the post, were not enough.
The result lifts Palace to 16th in the Premier League, moving them three points clear of the relegation zone. Despite a shaky start to the season, manager Oliver Glasner’s side have now gone unbeaten in six matches, showing resilience after a tough run of fixtures. Ipswich remain without a home win in the Premier League and sit in 19th place.
Palace’s next challenge comes against Everton, while Ipswich will look to bounce back in December with three more home games.
