Aaron Boupendza, a promising forward for Gabon, tragically passed away at the age of 28 after reportedly falling from a building in China. The football world is in mourning following the announcement of his death by Gabon’s football federation (Fegafoot) on 16 April 2025. Boupendza had recently joined Chinese club Zhejiang FC, based in Hangzhou, from Romania’s Rapid Bucharest in January.

Boupendza, known for his speed and skill, represented Gabon in 35 international caps, making a notable impact during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Cameroon, where he scored the winner against Comoros. Despite his team’s exit in the round of 16, his performance left a lasting impression on the tournament.

The forward’s career spanned multiple countries, with stints in France, Portugal, Turkey, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United States, before moving to China. He began his professional journey with CF Mounana in his home country, Gabon.

Gabon’s president-elect, Gen Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, joined many others in paying tribute, describing Boupendza as a “talented centre-forward” who brought pride to Gabonese football. The football community has expressed deep condolences to his family, remembering him as a respected and beloved figure both on and off the pitch.

Fegafoot also expressed their sorrow, writing, “Boupendza is remembered as a great striker who made his mark during Afcon.” Fans and players worldwide have shared their tributes to the young star whose life and career were tragically cut short.
