Brighton & Hove Albion edged a thrilling Women’s Super League clash against West Ham United, clinching a 3-2 victory courtesy of a late goal from Fran Kirby.
The England star delivered the decisive moment in the 85th minute, finishing off Kiko Seike’s pass with a shot that kissed the post before crossing the line. The result keeps Brighton in third place, maintaining their impressive start to the season.
Brighton dominated much of the first half, with Rachel McLauchlan opening the scoring in style. Latching onto Kirby’s clever flick, McLauchlan cut inside and curled a superb shot into the bottom corner for her first goal in a Brighton shirt.
McLauchlan then turned provider, setting up Seike, whose clinical finish from close range doubled the Seagulls’ lead and showcased their attacking cohesion.
Despite Brighton’s control, West Ham’s captain Katrina Gorry inspired a spirited comeback with two spectacular long-range strikes in quick succession. The Australian midfielder’s goals brought the Hammers level before the break, raising hopes of a hard-earned point.
However, Gorry’s substitution in the second half, due to a shoulder injury sustained in a tackle on Seike, left West Ham lacking their midfield dynamo.
Brighton pushed for a winner, and their persistence paid off when Kirby’s late effort sealed the victory. Her experience and composure were evident as she capitalized on Seike’s pass to send the Amex crowd of 4,638 into raptures.
The result marked an end to Brighton’s three-game winless run at home, reaffirming their status as one of the league’s top teams this season. The contributions of McLauchlan and Kirby highlighted Brighton’s depth and quality across the pitch.
For West Ham, it was another tough outing on the road. Rehanne Skinner’s side has now lost 11 of their last 15 away games, conceding in all of them. Gorry’s brilliant double provided a silver lining, but her injury adds to the Hammers’ woes as they sit precariously in ninth place.
Brighton will aim to build on this result as they continue their push for a top-three finish. Meanwhile, West Ham must address their defensive frailties and find consistency if they are to steer clear of the relegation battle.
