Ecuadorian international footballer Marco Angulo has tragically passed away at the age of 22, succumbing to injuries sustained in a car crash a month prior. The Liga de Quito midfielder, who was on loan from FC Cincinnati, was involved in a serious accident on October 7th on the Ruminahui highway in southeastern Quito. Angulo was traveling with four other individuals when their vehicle collided with a 50-tonne metal structure.

Following the accident, Angulo underwent a decompressive craniectomy to alleviate pressure caused by internal bleeding in his head. He also suffered a pulmonary contusion, necessitating the insertion of a chest tube. Despite medical efforts and a month-long fight for his life, Angulo sadly passed away on Monday night.

Liga de Quito released a statement expressing their profound sorrow over Angulo’s passing, extending their deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. The club recognized his departure as an immeasurable loss that would forever remain etched in their hearts. Club captain Ezequiel Piovi also shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, bidding farewell to the young footballer.

Tragically, Angulo’s death marks the third fatality resulting from the car crash. Roberto Cabezas Simisterra and Victor Charcopa Nazareno, both footballers, also lost their lives in the accident.

Angulo, a promising midfielder, made his professional debut in 2020 and had already earned two caps for the Ecuadorian national team. His final appearance for his country was in a 2-1 victory against Australia in March 2023.

In the immediate aftermath of the crash, Angulo’s family expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of support and requested privacy as they navigated this difficult time. FC Cincinnati, Angulo’s parent club, also conveyed their support for the young player.
