Brazilian striker Matheus Cunha has reaffirmed his commitment to Wolverhampton Wanderers, stating that his recent comments about taking the “next step” in his career were misinterpreted.
The former Atletico Madrid forward, who has a £62.5 million release clause in his contract, insisted that his ambition is to take Wolves to “another level” rather than seeking an immediate move away.
Speaking in a social media video on Monday, Cunha addressed the speculation surrounding his interview with The Observer, in which he expressed a desire to compete for titles.
“It’s impossible for a player to be honest in an interview knowing that everything can be taken in any way,” he said. “I don’t think a lot of people read the interview properly or interpreted it correctly. My point was to talk about Wolves and show how happy I am here. Of course, as ambitious players, we want to achieve more and take this club to another level.”
Pereira Confirms Cunha’s Commitment
Wolves, currently 17th in the Premier League and nine points clear of the relegation zone, are battling to secure their top-flight status. Head coach Vítor Pereira played down any concerns over Cunha’s future, emphasizing the forward’s dedication to the team.
“He is committed. This is the present. The future, I don’t know,” Pereira said. “He knows his potential. He is a top player. It’s normal to have ambitions, but the most important thing is to be committed and help the team achieve our targets.”
Cunha has been instrumental for Wolves this season, scoring 15 goals. However, he is currently serving a four-game suspension following his red card against Bournemouth in the FA Cup. He will miss Tuesday’s match against West Ham and Saturday’s clash with Ipswich before being eligible to return against Tottenham on April 13.
Despite his temporary absence, Wolves remain focused on their survival bid, with Pereira emphasizing the importance of unity within the squad.
“The focus is on the next game. Matheus is part of the team, not for this match, but our priority remains the team as a whole,” Pereira added.
As Wolves look to secure their Premier League status, Cunha’s performances and commitment will be crucial in helping the club move forward.
