Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim faces a crucial decision after goalkeeper Altay Bayindir’s disappointing debut in United’s 4-1 defeat to Newcastle.

With regular first-choice goalkeeper Andre Onana dropped for the game, Amorim’s gamble backfired as Bayindir’s errors contributed to United’s heavy loss. The Turkish goalkeeper’s mistake leading to Newcastle’s fourth goal, a poor pass intercepted by Joelinton, further exacerbated the situation.

Bayindir, who joined from Fenerbahce in 2023, was making his Premier League debut, but his lack of control over the game and his inability to cope with crosses or complete passes left much to be desired. His poor distribution, completing only 47.4% of 57 passes, became a key factor in the loss.

Amorim had hoped to give Onana a break, following a string of costly mistakes, including two in the 2-2 Europa League draw against Lyon. Onana’s performance in recent games, where he has made eight errors leading to goals since last season, has drawn criticism from fans and pundits alike.

Roy Keane and Paul Robinson have both suggested that Amorim’s decision to rest Onana could be a sign of management, urging the goalkeeper to regain his confidence and form away from the spotlight. However, following Bayindir’s disappointing performance, Amorim now faces a dilemma: return Onana for the crucial Europa League quarter-final second leg against Lyon or give Bayindir another chance.

Despite the loss, Amorim remains focused on the upcoming clash with Lyon, stressing that his focus is now solely on the next match. “I’m going to choose the best starting XI for the next match,” he said, offering no hints about whether Onana will return.

Paul Robinson, however, believes Onana’s absence may extend beyond just one match. “I don’t think he’s going to play [against Lyon],” said the former England goalkeeper. “You don’t take him out for one game and then put him back in without expecting issues.”

As United’s quest for a trophy and a place in next season’s Champions League continues, Amorim’s goalkeeper dilemma is now one of the biggest challenges of his tenure at Old Trafford.
