Atlético Madrid staged a thrilling comeback to beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 in a dramatic Champions League clash at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, despite playing with 10 men for over an hour.

Former Manchester City star Julián Álvarez was the hero for Atlético, scoring twice, including a 90th-minute winner that secured a crucial three points for Diego Simeone’s side.

The match started poorly for the hosts when Pablo Barrios was sent off in the 25th minute for a reckless challenge on Nordi Mukiele. Leverkusen capitalized on their numerical advantage just before halftime, with Piero Hincapié heading in from Mukiele’s cross to put the German champions ahead.

However, Atlético came alive in the second half, fueled by the raucous home crowd. Álvarez equalized in the 53rd minute with a brilliant solo effort, holding off defenders before firing past Matej Kovar.

The match turned fiery as tempers flared on both sides. Leverkusen’s Hincapié was sent off in the 76th minute for a second yellow card after fouling Giuliano Simeone, leaving both teams with 10 players.

Álvarez then sealed the victory in the dying moments, rounding Kovar and slotting home to spark jubilant celebrations. The win moves Atlético to third in the group, keeping their hopes of automatic knockout-stage qualification alive.

A Test of Character

This victory showcased Atlético Madrid’s resilience and ability to thrive under pressure. Reduced to 10 men early on, Simeone’s side refused to back down, instead outplaying Leverkusen in a spirited second-half display.

Julián Álvarez continues to prove his worth as a marquee signing, with his 16th and 17th goals of the season inspiring the hosts.

Looking Ahead

Both Atlético and Leverkusen remain in contention for the top eight, with their final group-stage matches set to decide their fates. Atlético’s next test will be a pivotal away fixture, while Leverkusen must recover quickly to stay in the hunt for progression.
