Atletico and Spain defender Robin Le Normad may be out indefinitely. Le Normand may be facing a long absence from football action after picking what is looking like a serious head injury during the Madrid derby over the weekend. The Euro champion had a head collision with Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni as the one-all draw entered its closing moments.
The 27-year-old defender was immediately attended to by medical staff at the venue of the game. Further tests have revealed the former Real Sociedad man sustained a traumatic brain injury and a subdural hematoma, a situation involving the collection of blood between the brain surface and the skull. Atletico released a statement to confirm the diagnosis:
“Robin Le Normand suffered a severe blow to the head in the final minutes of the Madrid derby, for which he underwent a series of tests and was assessed by specialists who determined that he suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) with subdural haematoma.”

Le Normand’s absence will be significant for Atletico who has relied on his solid defensive form since arriving from Real Sociedad for a €30 million fee in the summer. The defender moved to Atletico after a successful Euro 2024 outing with Spain where he made six appearances including the final game against England.
No definite recovery timeline has been specified for Le Normand. It is expected, however, that he will be absent for a long period. His health and recovery will are the club’s priority as he’s expected to begin his rehabilitation and care immediately.
