Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has weighed in on the sexual harassment allegation levelled against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The New Daily Prime reported that during an interview on Arise Television, Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of sexual harassment.
However, the allegation led to her suspension from the Senate for six months on Thursday.
Reacting to the development, Mrs Tinubu, in a statement issued by her spokesperson, Busola Kukoyi, emphasised that the Nigerian Senate remains a mature institution that must be treated with respect.
She made this remark while addressing journalists at the State House in Abuja.
Speaking ahead of International Women’s Day, the First Lady dismissed concerns over how the Senate handled the matter, insisting that lawmakers were doing what was needed.

Having served in the Senate for 12 years, Mrs Tinubu stressed that the chamber should be a place of honour, not controversy. She also encouraged Nigerian women to assert themselves in leadership roles.
“I know with what is going on in the Senate, you may say, why am I not taking a position? I believe that the Senate is doing what is needed because that’s what it is. It is an inside place, and it’s a mature chamber. It’s a mature chamber, and it should be treated with respect. It’s an honour for you to be in that place alone.
“I was there for 12 years, even in my younger days, and I’m still trying to look young, but people compliment you all the time, only that, women raise yourself, don’t be in a position that men will be talking to you anyhow”.
Ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8, the First Lady honoured the remarkable achievements of women worldwide, with a special focus on Nigeria.
She highlighted the significant strides women have made over the decades, from the influential matriarchs of the past to contemporary figures like Zuriel Oduwole, a dedicated advocate for peace.
