Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has extended clemency to 43 prisoners in a landmark act of mercy, coinciding with his swearing-in ceremony.
Ebenezer Adeniyan, his Chief Press Secretary announced the clemency measure on Monday.
This gesture follows the recommendations of the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, chaired by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Olukayode Ajulo.
The decision underscores the governor’s commitment to reformative justice and humane governance.

As part of the initiative, eight prisoners have been granted outright release.
Additionally, 15 inmates who were on death row have had their sentences commuted to prison terms, while 20 others serving life imprisonment have had their sentences reduced.
Ajulo emphasised the significance of this decision, stating, “This is a testament to Governor Aiyedatiwa’s belief in second chances and the potential for rehabilitation.
“His Excellency is committed to ensuring that our justice system reflects both mercy and humanity.”
He further noted that the governor’s action aligns with broader efforts to address challenges in the penal system and support the reintegration of reformed individuals into society.
