October is a truly fortunate month as it has numerous International Days that have been approved by the US government. For Nigerians, October holds particular meaning since the nation attained independence on the first day of the month several years ago.

But this month’s commemorations do not end with that record; some activities supporting them have been compiled for your perusal today.

International Day of the Girl Child

Every year on October 11th, people celebrate this. “Girls’ vision for the future” is the theme for this year. Jagran Josh claims that the purpose of the holiday is to advocate for girls’ rights and give them a voice.

UNICEF emphasises the importance of the day as a key global moment on which to celebrate girls everywhere, amplifying their voices, actions and leadership. It is a day that belongs to everyone who cares about girls and their rights.

World Cotton Day

By coincidence, it is today! Four years ago, the UN General Assembly approved October 7 each year. This day is observed to highlight the value of cotton, a crop grown in more than 75 nations on five continents. For the African nations that produce cotton, particularly the C4 (Cotton 4)—Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Chad—cotton has been a source of income.
