A specialist has identified four primary behaviours that could suggest your child might have autism. Autism isn’t a disease but rather a developmental difference that affects how people perceive, interact with, and understand the world around them. The condition varies widely across individuals but often manifests through distinct behaviours in childhood that can serve as early indicators.
One primary indicator of autism involves changes in verbal communication. The children who have begun developing language skills may suddenly struggle to articulate words they previously used comfortably. “These children might lose the ability to effectively communicate using words they’ve known, which can be startling for parents,” Blakey explains.
Autistic children often experience significant challenges with non-verbal communication. They may have trouble maintaining eye contact, reading body language, or understanding social boundaries. These difficulties can significantly hinder their ability to interact socially and form relationships with peers.
A reluctance or inability to engage in social play is another red flag. Blakey points out, “Children on the autism spectrum might not participate in shared games or imaginative play, activities that are crucial for social development and peer interaction.”
Additionally, repetitive behaviors and unusual responses to sensory experiences are common among autistic children. This can manifest as repetitive movements, such as hand-flapping or rocking, and extreme reactions to sensory stimuli like bright lights or loud noises, which are often overwhelming to them.
The expert emphasizes the importance of early detection and intervention, which can significantly improve outcomes. “Identifying these signs early can lead to earlier assessments and support, equipping children with the tools they need to succeed,” he says.
