Two students of the Borno State University, Maiduguri,were yesterday feared dead as the school’s Staff bus and a truck collided on Njimtilo Road in the state capital.
Also,no fewer than 20 other students were seriously injured in the accident .
According to the Borno State Police Command, a truck collided with the university’s bus, causing significant damage and loss of lives.
The Borno State Police Command spokesperson, Nahum Kenneth, confirmed the accident, stating that a male and female students lost their lives, while three others were currently unconscious and receiving medical care at the Umaru Shehu Specialist Hospital.
He further disclosed that the bus was conveying 30 students at the time of the accident.
However, 20 of the injured student were still receiving treatment ,while the other 10 were unhurt
.Meanwhile, the university’s community is still in shock and mourning, with students, faculty and staff expressing their condolences to the families of the deceased.
The school’s management has also promised to provide necessary support and assistance to the affected families.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but eyewitness reports said, that the truck’s driver lost control before colliding with the bus. The police are working hard to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Moreover, the State Police Command has urged motorists to exercise caution and adhere to traffic rules to prevent accidents. The command also appealed to the public to provide any information that may aid in their investigation.
Also,lectures have been suspended for a day as a mark of respect for the deceased students. Counseling services are being provided to students and staff affected by the crash
The road accident comes on the heels of a recent boat mishap in Borno State, which claimed the lives of a five-month-old infant, two children and an adult in September,2024.
The state government has called for increased vigilance and safety measures to prevent such tragedies in future.
