Tinubu vows to build modern, tech-driven police force

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to reforming the Nigeria Police Force into a well-trained, tech-driven institution.

He pledged enhanced welfare, modern tools, and greater support for officers and their families.

Tinubu spoke through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the maiden edition of the National Police Day celebration in Abuja yesterday.

He declared April 7 of every year as National Police Day to honour the sacrifices of police personnel and commemorate their contributions to national peace and security.

“As President, I reaffirm this administration’s steadfast dedication to the welfare and empowerment of the Nigeria Police Force,” Tinubu stated.

“We are resolute in our commitment to police welfare and comprehensive reform. A secure Nigeria is vital for our collective prosperity, and this vision begins with ensuring that our police force is well-equipped, well-trained, and well-motivated.”

The President outlined immediate measures to uplift the morale and effectiveness of the force, including provision of modern tools and technology, better housing, accessible healthcare, quality education for officers’ families, and improved salaries and benefits.

“These promises will begin to materialize immediately. Anything less would be unacceptable,” Tinubu said, emphasising that his administration will leave no stone unturned in addressing internal security challenges like banditry, insurgency, and kidnapping.

He described the police as the cornerstone of national security and frontline defenders of democracy, noting that the newly institutionalized National Police Day is a symbol of the government’s respect and enduring partnership with the force.

“To the families of our fallen heroes, we extend our deepest condolences and our unwavering commitment to preserving their legacy. April 7 is not merely a date—it is a symbol of national gratitude,” Tinubu added.

The President also praised Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun for his leadership in advancing reforms that align with the administration’s goals, describing the ongoing transformation as a foundation for a police force all Nigerians can be proud of.

However, IGP Egbetokun said the National Police Day serves not only as a remembrance of the establishment of the police force but also as a tribute to the sacrifices and heroics of officers in operations across the country and beyond.

He highlighted ongoing reforms focused on building a trusted, professional force that upholds justice and human rights while contributing to national development through enhanced policing.

The celebration at Eagle Square featured an inspection of the guard by the Vice President, tactical unit processions, and silent drill displays.

Dignitaries in attendance included the Governors and Deputy Governors of various states, the National Security Adviser, Service Chiefs, members of the National Assembly, and heads of security and paramilitary agencies.
