Tensions rise as thugs storm Oredo Local Government Secretariat

In a disturbing turn of events, suspected political thugs stormed the Oredo Local Government Area secretariat in Edo State on Monday, forcibly preventing Chairman Tom Obaseki from accessing his office. Armed and chanting war songs, the hoodlums occupied strategic positions within the secretariat, prompting Obaseki to retreat.

Obaseki, who had resumed work following a recent Edo State High Court ruling that nullified his suspension, expressed concern over the escalating situation. “I came here to continue my work as elected chairman of Oredo Local Government. I met a whole lot of thugs who have already overtaken the council. This is a very disturbing trend. We are calling on the security agencies to arrest the situation. What is important is that we have a restraining order,” he stated.

The crisis unfolded after the Edo State House of Assembly suspended Obaseki and 17 other council chairmen, citing alleged insubordination and gross misconduct based on a petition by Governor Monday Okpebholo. However, the high court’s ruling on Friday nullified the suspension, paving the way for Obaseki’s attempted return to office.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with the thugs blocking the entrance to the secretariat and intimidating staff members. “It was like a war zone,” said one staff member, who wished to remain anonymous. “The thugs were armed and looked ready to attack anyone who dared to challenge them.”

The takeover of the secretariat has raised concerns about the safety of staff members and the potential for further violence. “We are worried about the situation and urge the authorities to take immediate action to restore order,” said a local resident.

The Edo State Government has yet to comment on the situation, but sources indicate that Governor Okpebholo is under pressure to resolve the crisis. The governor’s office has been criticized for its handling of the situation, with many accusing it of instigating the violence.

As tensions continue to rise, concerns are growing over the potential for further instability in the region. The incident highlights the ongoing struggles for power and control in Edo State’s local government.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the takeover of the secretariat, describing it as “an attack on democracy.” The party’s state chairman, Tony Aziegbemi, called on the governor to take immediate action to restore order and ensure the safety of staff members.

The situation remains volatile, with many fearing that the crisis could escalate into further violence. As the standoff continues, residents are bracing themselves for the worst, hoping that calm will be restored soon.
