Vice President Kashim Shettima has reiterated the federal government’s (FG) dedication to enhancing healthcare delivery in Nigeria, particularly in rural areas. 

During a visit by a delegation from the West African College of Physicians, Shettima emphasised the crucial role of healthcare professionals in the nation’s health ecosystem and affirmed the government’s commitment to supporting and retaining medical talent in Nigeria.

The Vice President acknowledged the challenges faced by medical professionals, praising their selflessness in serving the nation despite opportunities to leave the country.

“Yours is a very noble profession, you stayed not because you lacked options, but because of your moral obligation to serve,” he stated. 

He assured the delegation that under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, efforts are underway to address pressing healthcare issues, including the recent appointment of Professor Ali Pate as the Coordinating Minister for Health and Social Welfare.

Shettima also reflected on his tenure as Governor of Borno State, where he sponsored female students to study Medicine and Surgery in Sudan, some of whom have since returned to practice in Nigeria. 

He emphasised the government’s moral obligation to assist the people and expressed optimism for the future of Nigeria’s healthcare system. 

The Vice President assured the medical community that the government will provide the necessary support and respect to all healthcare professionals in the country.
