Sanwo-Olu debunks reports of suing EFCC over alleged arrest plans

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has officially refuted claims that he has filed a lawsuit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in response to an alleged plan for his arrest and prosecution after his tenure.

The governor addressed the rumors in a statement released on Tuesday by the state Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Lawal Pedro.

The statement clarified, “Our attention has been drawn to the news circulating in a section of the media, titled ‘Sanwo-Olu Sues EFCC Over Alleged Plan to Arrest, Prosecute Him After Tenure.’ Mr. Sanwo-Olu did not sue the EFCC in any court, as he has no reason to do so.”

It emphasised that Sanwo-Olu, who has nearly three years left in office and enjoys immunity from prosecution, has not been investigated or contacted by the EFCC regarding any allegations.

The Attorney General further asserted that the governor remains dedicated to integrity, prudent resource management, and enhancing the lives of Lagosians.

Earlier reports had suggested that Sanwo-Olu filed a lawsuit through his lawyer, Darlington Ozurumba, at the Federal High Court in Abuja, claiming the EFCC intended to act against him for alleged misconduct after his term.

The lawsuit, reportedly filed in June, aimed to prevent any EFCC actions, citing threats that allegedly violated Sanwo-Olu’s constitutional rights.

When the matter was mentioned in court on Tuesday, the plaintiff’s lawyer indicated that an amended originating summons had been filed. However, EFCC counsel Hadiza Afegbua stated she had not yet reviewed the updated documents, leading Justice Joyce Abdulmalik to adjourn the case until November 11.

The summons included claims that EFCC officials were pressuring the governor’s aides and contractors to make statements against him. Sanwo-Olu, who was first sworn in as governor in 2019 and re-elected for a second term in 2023, continues to maintain his commitment to serving the people of Lagos State amidst the swirling controversies.
