The Edo State Police Command has initiated a thorough investigation regarding the tragic death of Kaduna Eboigbodin, the former Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), who died under suspicious circumstances at a police checkpoint in Benin City. This directive was announced by the Command’s spokesperson, Moses Yamu, following instructions from the Commissioner of Police, Umoru Ozigi, on Wednesday.
According to eyewitness accounts, the distressing incident unfolded on Monday when Eboigbodin was driving with his wife along Upper Sakponba Road. As they passed through a police checkpoint, officers signalled the couple to stop and requested documentation for their vehicle. Eboigbodin promptly complied, presenting the necessary papers as required by law.
However, tensions escalated when a disagreement arose regarding the authenticity of the documents. Police officers allegedly alleged that the vehicle was stolen, which led to a fierce argument. Witnesses reported that Eboigbodin was bewildered and insisted on understanding the charges against him, rather than being forcibly taken to the police station as demanded by the officers.
As the confrontation continued, eyewitnesses observed that Eboigbodin grew increasingly agitated. Suddenly, he collapsed at the scene, triggering alarm among those present. Immediate attempts were made to revive him, but unfortunately, they were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
The shocking occurrence has raised numerous questions regarding police conduct and procedural adherence at checkpoints. The Edo State Police Command has stated that they are committed to uncovering the full details surrounding the incident, emphasizing their dedication to transparency and accountability in the wake of this tragic event. As the investigation unfolds, many in the community are eagerly awaiting answers and justice for the deceased’s family.
