A false alarm of bomb threats in Jos, Plateau State’s capital, sent residents into a frenzy early this  morning.

Rumors of explosives planted in key locations within the city’s business district spread rapidly, causing widespread panic.

However, the Plateau State police command swiftly intervened, dismissing the claims and reassuring residents of their safety.

According to DSP Alfred Alabo, spokesperson for the police command, a report of a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) planted in a shallow hole, at Ahmadu Bello Way, beside the Old JUTH fence, prompted the swift response.

Upon receiving the report, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina, directed  the Officer in charge of the Command’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and Area Commander for Metro, in collaboration with the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for “C” Division, to get a team of bomb technicians to the scene for assessment.

Upon arrival, the area was cordoned off, and a thorough examination by the bomb technicians  revealed that the hole was safe and free of explosive devices.

The police commissioner commended residents for their vigilance and cooperation, urging them to continue with their daily activities without fear.

This incident comes amid concerns over security in Plateau State, following recent attacks in Bokkos and Barkin-Ladi local government areas.

Amnesty International has condemned the Nigerian authorities over their failure to protect the citizens of Plateau State. The organization also highlighted the need for an impartial, independent and effective investigation into the attacks that have plagued the state recently.

However, the state government have been putting initiatives into place to ensure the safety of their citizens. The state government has deployed 600 trained individuals as Operation Rainbow’s Neighbourhood Operatives to bolster local defense against insecurity.

The government has also established various agencies, like The Plateau State Emergency Relief and Management Agency, to address the root causes of insecurity in the state.
