Edo State Deputy Governor, Dennis Idahosa, has responded to claims of nepotism regarding the recent nomination of Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, the son of former Governor Adams Oshiomhole, as the Commissioner for Health-designate.
Idahosa, in an interview on Channels Television, clarified that Cyril’s appointment was based purely on his qualifications and not his family connections.
According to Idahosa, Cyril Oshiomhole is a well-educated and experienced medical doctor, having studied both in Nigeria and further pursued his education in the United States.
He stressed that Cyril’s appointment was made on merit and competence, asserting, “The fact that he is Oshiomhole’s son does not disqualify him from holding a position he is competent to manage.”
Refuting allegations of nepotism, Idahosa emphasized that former Governor Adams Oshiomhole actually opposed his son’s nomination. He stated, “Adams opposed it. He was against the nomination because of the vision the governor has for the people of Edo State.” This, he clarified, highlights that the governor’s decision was not influenced by family ties but rather by a commitment to competence and the state’s development.
Idahosa also responded to concerns about state capture, noting that what is happening in Edo State is not related to such practices. He emphasised that the focus is on ensuring the appointment of qualified individuals who can effectively serve the people of the state.
Additionally, Idahosa highlighted his role as deputy governor, stating that while he discusses cabinet matters with the governor, his primary statutory responsibility is overseeing the boundary commission, which he chairs.
