A 32-year-old man, Sunday Abilewa, has been arrested by the Ondo State Police Command for allegedly killing his father, Abu Abilewa, following a dispute over a motorcycle.
The incident occurred on December 31, 2024, in the Eberi quarters of Isua Akoko, the headquarters of Akoko South East Local Government Area in Ondo State.
According to the police, Sunday had asked his father to buy him a new motorcycle, but the deceased refused. This led to a heated argument between the father and son.
In the course of the argument, Sunday allegedly grabbed his father’s neck and strangled him, leading to his death.
Despite the efforts of Sunday’s mother to intervene and save her husband, she was unable to stop the attack as Sunday was reportedly under the influence of hard drugs at the time.
The incident resulted in the tragic death of Abu Abilewa. Inspector Abdulateef Suleiman, the prosecutor, stated that the offense contravened Section 316 of the Criminal Code, and it was punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol.II, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.
Sunday was arraigned before a magistrate court in Akure, where his plea was not taken because the court lacked the jurisdiction to handle a murder case.
The prosecutor requested that Sunday be remanded in a correctional center while awaiting legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Magistrate Mrs. F.A. Akinboboye, in her ruling, ordered that Sunday be remanded in prison custody, pending advice from the DPP’s office. The case has been adjourned to February 25, 2025, for mention.
