The Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR) has categorically denied claims suggesting that Peter Obi advocated for the dismantling of Nigeria’s church structure.

The organization labeled these interpretations of Obi’s recent media interview as misleading and emphasized the importance of accurately conveying his message.

In a statement issued by spokesperson Ibrahim Umar in Abuja, POMR clarified that the headlines surrounding the interview misrepresented Obi’s intent.

“We have been made aware of a significant distortion of Obi’s recent media interview,” Umar stated.

“The claims that he called for the dismantling of churches in Nigeria are erroneous and serve a mischievous agenda.”

Umar underscored Obi’s deep faith and respect for all religions, explaining that the interview focused on integrating faith more effectively into daily life.

He referenced biblical passages to illustrate Obi’s views, including James 2:14, which emphasizes the necessity of works alongside faith.

“Faith without works is unhelpful,” Umar quoted, pointing out that Obi’s remarks about transforming night vigils into production nights were meant to highlight the value of productive worship.

“Even Jesus Christ did not choose his disciples while they were praying; he found them working,” Obi was quoted as saying, stressing the importance of action in conjunction with faith.

Umar reinforced this message by citing Proverbs 14:23, which states, “All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.”

He urged Nigerians to balance prayer with action and productivity.

The POMR pointed out that there is no biblical basis for idleness, asserting that Jesus rewarded diligence, as seen in the Parable of the Three Servants (Matthew 25:14-30).

“Worship communities should heed St. James’s advice to be ‘doers of the word,’” Umar added.

The media office concluded that the media’s portrayal of Obi’s interview contradicts its true essence and should be dismissed.

“As a leader focused on transitioning Nigeria from consumption to production, Obi’s message about enhancing productivity is critical, especially as the country faces economic challenges,” Umar asserted.

Key quotes from Obi’s interview, including his comments on the need to shift from traditional worship practices to more productive engagements, were intended to inspire positive change within Nigeria’s worship culture while honoring faith.
