Deborah Ibukunoluwa Aderogba, a final-year Foreign Languages student at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Nigeria, hosted an Art Therapy session at the university’s Health Centre on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.
The session, titled “Art as a Healing Therapy,” included the donation of 25 artworks and 500 healing cards. Both walk-in patients and those admitted participated in creating art and attending the therapy sessions.
The event was inaugurated by Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration, Prof. Yomi Daramola, who praised Miss Aderogba’s selflessness and innovative healing methods. Prof. Akanni Akinyemi, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Development, also lauded her unique personality, drive, and dedication.
Miss Aderogba saw this outreach as a way to give back to the university community. She had previously conducted similar events at Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesa, Osun State (2021), The Nigerian French Language Village Clinic, Ajara-Badary (2022), and Hospital da Criança, Martagão Gesteira in Salvador, Brazil (2023) during her studies.
The outreach aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 3, which promotes Good Health and Wellbeing through artistic expressions to foster recovery and overall well-being of patients.
The event was attended by notable figures, including Prof. Adebayo, HOD of Foreign Languages; Dr. O.O. Osunniran, Acting Director, Health Centre; Dr. Olatunji, HOD of Pharmacy; Phar. Akingbile, HOD of Nursing; Mr. Adebisi, and Dr. R.O. Ogunlusi, among others.
